कऱ्हेचे तिरी एक असे मोरगांव । तिथे नांदतो मोरया देव राव ।
चला जाऊ यात्रेसी महापुण्य आहे । मनी इच्छिले मोरया देत आहे ॥
(Moragaon is situated on the banks of Karha river where Morayā i.e. Gaṇeśa is present to bless devotees by fulfilling their desires. Let us gather there for pilgrimage which bestows great amount of Puṇya-religious merit)
Śrī Kṣetra Moragon is a primordial seat of Gāṇapatya saṁpradāya (Cult which worships Gaṇeśa / Gaṇapatī). The original name of this place is Bhūsvānaṁdabhuvan. The interior of the land in which this settlement was located was shaped like a peacock.
तत्र भूमिगुहायां तु शतयोजनविस्तृते । मयूराकाररूपेण महामाया सनातनी बभूवह । ब्रह्मपुराण अध्याय ३।३७-३८
Brahma, Viṣṇu, Śiva, Śakti, Sūrya performed penance here. Then Śrī Gaṇeśa, the Omkara himself appeared to them. Upon their invocation, Bhagwan Gaṇeśa agreed to reside in that area.
According to religious ceremonies, these five gods installed Śrī Gaṇeśa here on fourth day of bright half of the Bhādrapad Month (Bhādrapada Shuddha Chaturthi). As a result, the significance of Śrī Kṣetra Morgaon is remarkable. Śrī Mudgal Purāṇa describes about the place.
There is another reason why this place was named Mayurgrama or Morgaon and that is because it was once the home of peacocks. As a result, the Lord or deity of such a place came to be known as Mayureśvara, which means Lord of Mayurbhumi (Land of the Peacock).
It is a very holy and sacred shrine of Gaṇeśa as devotees believe that auspicious wishes made here will surely be fulfilled. Vāmanabhaṭa, the father of Mahabhakta Morya Gosavi came to this region in the 13th century, worshiped Śrī Mayureśvara and begot a son in the form of Śrīman Mahasadhu Śrī Moraya Gosavi as his blessings, who was nothing but Śrī Mayureśvara himself.
Later in the 14th century, Śrī Morya Gosavi worshiped Śrī Mayureśvara and he blessed him with an idol of Śrī Maṁgalamūrtī in the form of Tāṁdalā (a rude stone smeared with red lead and used as an idol) at Śrī Brahmakamandalu Tīrtha. He consecrated Śrī Maṁgalamūrtī Idol at Chinchwad & erected a grand temple there. He established a system of pilgrimage twice a year i.e. Māgha and Bhādrapada Chaturthi to Morgaon. Even now the palanquin of Śrī Maṁgalamūrtī from Chinchwad comes to Śrī Kṣetra Morgaon on both these Chaturthis (fourth day of bright half of those two months).
Another such Yogi, ascetic associated with this sacred place, was Śrī Gaṇeśa Yogiṁdrācārya. His parents came here from their native village Ambi near Somnath when Śrī Mayureśvara appeared in their dream & blessed them. Śrī Gaṇeśa Yogiṁdrācārya was born on the auspicious day of Śravan Shuddha Paṁcami. He worshiped Śrī (Mayureśvara) for 24 years. He copied the extinct Śrī Mudgal Purāṇa with his own hands and also copied the Mudgaladesh Shastra with great efforts. He has written a commentary on these two books.
He performed a great task of spreading Gaṇeśa Sampradaya through collecting old literature relating to Gāṇapatya Sampradaya. Śrī Gaṇeśa Yogiṁdrācārya was a great drawing artist. On the back wall of the place where he used to write the Purāṇas, he painted the various forms of Gaṇeśa described in the Mudgal Purāṇa. One of his disciples Śrī Subramaniam established Śrī Yogiṁdrā Math near the temple of Śrī Mayureśvara.
For the worship of Gaṇeśa, Morgaon was given as a grant (Inam) Chhatrapati Śrī Rajaram Maharaj to the Deo family of Chinchwad. Since then it came under the management of Chinchwad Deosthan Trust. It is because of Chinchwadkar Śrīman Mahasadhu Śrī Morya Gosavi Maharaj and Śrī Gaṇeśa Yogiṁdrācārya that this area is of great importance. Many Gāṇapatya i.e. devotees & worshipers of Gaṇapatī/Gaṇeśa have done worship at this place.
